The 74HC245N from Texas Instruments is an octal 3-state bus transceiver that provides bidirectional data flow between two buses. Eight data channels (A0-A7 and B0-B7) can transfer data in either direction under control of the DIR (direction) pin. When DIR is HIGH, data flows from A to B; when LOW, from B to A. The active-low output enable (OE) pin puts both A and B outputs in a high-impedance state, disconnecting the device from both buses for bus-sharing. The +/-6mA output drive at 4.5V provides sufficient current to drive long PCB traces, cables, and LED strip data lines. The 74HC245 is widely used as a bus buffer between microprocessor buses and peripheral chips, as a signal amplifier for long LED strip data lines (WS2812B, etc.), and as a level translator between 3.3V and 5V logic domains.

The 74HC245N contains eight pairs of 3-state buffers, one pair for each data channel. Each pair consists of an A-to-B buffer and a B-to-A buffer. The DIR input selects which set of buffers is active: DIR=HIGH enables the A-to-B buffers (A is input, B is output), DIR=LOW enables the B-to-A buffers (B is input, A is output). The OE input, when HIGH, disables all buffers and places both A and B ports in high-impedance state, regardless of DIR. This allows multiple 74HC245 devices to share a common bus, with only one enabled at a time. The 3-state outputs have active pull-up and pull-down transistors when enabled, and both transistors off when disabled. The 12ns propagation delay supports bus speeds up to approximately 30MHz. For LED strip applications, the 74HC245 boosts the data signal to drive long strips that exceed the MCU output capability.
