The MFRC63003HN from NXP Semiconductors is the recommended version of the MFRC630 family for new designs. It is a high-performance multi-protocol NFC frontend IC that supports ISO/IEC 14443A, MIFARE Classic (1K/4K), MIFARE Ultralight, MIFARE Plus, MIFARE DESFire, and NTAG products at data rates up to 848kbit/s. Compared to the MFRC63002, the MFRC63003 offers a more flexible Low-Power Card Detection (LPCD) configuration via the new LPCD_OPTIONS register and additional Load Protocol settings optimized for smaller antennas. The internal transmitter can drive the reader antenna directly without additional active circuitry. The device supports SPI (up to 10Mbit/s), I2C (up to 1000kbit/s in HS mode), and UART host interfaces, plus a dedicated I2C for SAM connection.

The MFRC63003HN operates as a 13.56MHz NFC/RFID reader frontend. The internal transmitter generates the RF carrier at 13.56MHz from a 27.12MHz crystal oscillator via an integrated PLL, and modulates it according to the selected protocol for card communication. The antenna signal is transmitted through the TX1/TX2 output pins. On the receive side, the RXP/RXN differential inputs capture the card’s load-modulated response, which is processed by the analog interface and the contactless UART for protocol handling, CRC generation/verification, and framing. The 512-byte FIFO buffer enables high-throughput data transfer between the host and the contactless UART. The LPCD feature periodically wakes the device from power-down mode to check for card presence, consuming only nanoamps between checks.
