The MCP3208-CI/SL from Microchip Technology is a 12-bit 8-channel successive approximation A/D converter with SPI serial interface in a 16-pin SOIC package. The CI suffix denotes industrial temperature range (-40 to +85C), and SL denotes SOIC-16 package. It offers 8 single-ended or 4 differential input channels with 100ksps sampling rate at 5V supply. The simple 3-wire SPI interface is compatible with most microcontrollers. With only 400uA active current and 500nA standby, it is ideal for battery-powered multi-channel data acquisition systems. The MCP3204 is the 4-channel version in a 14-pin TSSOP.

The MCP3208 operates through four subsystems: (1) Input Multiplexer: An 8-channel analog multiplexer selects one of 8 single-ended or one of 4 differential input pairs based on the 3-bit channel address in the SPI command. (2) Sample and Hold: When a conversion is initiated, the selected input is sampled onto an internal hold capacitor (20pF) in approximately 1.5 clock cycles. (3) Successive Approximation: A 12-bit SAR (Successive Approximation Register) ADC performs the conversion in 12 clock cycles by binary search, comparing the held voltage against an internal DAC driven by the SAR logic. (4) SPI Interface: The conversion result is shifted out MSB-first on the DOUT pin synchronized with the CLK input, using a simple 3-wire protocol compatible with most MCU SPI peripherals.
