The MCP23S17-E/SS from Microchip is a 16-bit general-purpose I/O expander using an SPI interface (up to 10 MHz). It provides 16 bidirectional I/O pins organized as two 8-bit ports (PORTA and PORTB), each configurable for input or output. Three address pins allow up to 8 devices on one SPI bus for 128 total I/O pins. Two configurable interrupt pins (INTA, INTB) detect input changes independently or together. Each I/O pin can sink or source 25 mA.

The MCP23S17 communicates via SPI using standard register read/write protocol. Internal registers control I/O direction (IODIRA/B), output latches (OLATA/B), input polarity (IPOLA/B), and interrupt configuration. When configured as inputs, the interrupt-on-change feature compares pin states against stored values and asserts INTA/INTB when changes are detected. The interrupt capture register saves pin state at the time of interrupt.
