The MCP16311T-E/MS from Microchip Technology is a compact, high-efficiency, fixed-frequency synchronous step-down DC-DC converter that operates from input voltages up to 30 V. It integrates both high-side (300 mOhm) and low-side (170 mOhm) N-channel MOSFET switches in an 8-pin MSOP package, providing up to 1 A output current with adjustable output voltage from 2.0 V to 24 V. The device employs peak current mode control with internal compensation, simplifying the design by eliminating external compensation components. A key feature is the automatic PFM/PWM mode switching: the device operates in PWM mode at heavier loads for low output ripple, and automatically transitions to PFM mode at light loads to maintain high efficiency. The quiescent current in PFM mode is only 44 uA, and the shutdown current is a mere 3 uA, making the device ideal for battery-powered applications. The internal 300 us soft-start limits inrush current, while cycle-by-cycle current limiting and thermal shutdown provide robust protection.

The MCP16311T-E/MS operates through four key subsystems: (1) The control loop uses peak current mode control where the output voltage is sensed via the FB pin and compared to the 0.8 V internal reference. The error amplifier output controls the peak inductor current on a cycle-by-cycle basis. Internal compensation eliminates the need for external RC networks. (2) The power stage consists of integrated high-side and low-side N-channel MOSFETs driven by the BOOST capacitor circuit. The high-side switch connects the input to the inductor during the on-time, while the low-side switch provides a synchronous freewheeling path during the off-time, achieving up to 95% efficiency. (3) The mode controller automatically switches between PWM and PFM based on load current. In PWM mode at 500 kHz, the device maintains constant frequency operation. Below a load threshold, it enters PFM mode where switching pulses are skipped to reduce gate drive and switching losses, maintaining efficiency above 80% even at 1 mA load. (4) Protection circuits include UVLO at 3.6 V, cycle-by-cycle current limit, and thermal shutdown at 150°C.
