The Analog Devices MAX7219 is a compact serial input/output common-cathode display driver that interfaces microprocessors to 7-segment numeric LED displays of up to 8 digits, bar-graph displays, or 64 individual LEDs. On-chip features include a BCD code-B decoder, multiplex scan circuitry, segment and digit drivers, and an 8×8 static RAM that stores each digit. Only one external resistor is required to set the segment current for all LEDs. A convenient 4-wire serial interface connects to all common microprocessors. Individual digits may be addressed and updated without rewriting the entire display. The device includes 150uA low-power shutdown mode, analog and digital brightness control, and a scan-limit register for 1 to 8 digit display.

The MAX7219 operates as a serially controlled LED display driver with four key subsystems: 1) Serial Interface: Data is clocked in via DIN on CLK rising edges as 16-bit words (8-bit address, 8-bit data). LOAD/CS latches the data on its rising edge. Multiple devices can be daisy-chained through DOUT. 2) Decode Logic: The decode-mode register selects BCD code-B decoding or no-decode for each digit. BCD mode automatically maps numeric values to 7-segment patterns including hex characters. 3) Multiplex Scan: An internal oscillator drives the scanning of up to 8 digits at 800Hz, turning on one digit at a time while the corresponding segment data drives the anodes. The 8×8 static RAM maintains display data without processor intervention. 4) Brightness Control: An external RSET resistor sets maximum segment current. Digital brightness control uses a 16-step PWM duty cycle (1/32 to 31/32) for fine adjustment.
