The LTC4054ES5-4.2#TRPBF is an Analog Devices (formerly Linear Technology) complete single-cell Li-Ion / Li-Polymer battery charger with a 4.2V float voltage in a 5-pin TSOT-23 package. The device integrates a precision ±1% 4.2V voltage reference, current sense, and charge control logic, requiring only a single external resistor to program the charge current up to 500mA. The charge algorithm follows the standard CC-CV profile: constant-current charging until the battery reaches 4.2V, then constant-voltage charging with gradually decreasing current until C/10 termination. For deeply depleted cells below 2.9V, a preconditioning phase charges at 10% of the programmed current until the cell voltage rises to a safe level. The CHRG open-drain status output indicates charging in progress. Thermal regulation reduces the charge current when the junction temperature approaches 115°C, and thermal shutdown disables the charger at approximately 145°C. The #TRPBF suffix indicates tape-and-reel packaging with Pb-free finish.

The LTC4054 implements a CC-CV (constant-current / constant-voltage) charging algorithm. The PROG pin sets the charge current through an external resistor to ground: ICHARGE = 1000V / RPROG. An internal PMOS pass transistor regulates the charge current in CC mode and the battery voltage in CV mode. When the battery voltage is below 2.9V, the preconditioning circuit limits charge current to 10% of the programmed value. Once the battery reaches 4.2V, the charger transitions to CV mode, holding the output at 4.2V while the charge current naturally decreases. When the current drops below C/10 (10% of programmed current), the C/10 comparator triggers termination and the CHRG pin goes high-impedance. The internal ±1% bandgap reference ensures the 4.2V float voltage accuracy required for safe Li-Ion charging. Thermal regulation monitors the die temperature and reduces charge current linearly above 115°C to prevent overheating during high-power USB charging.
