The LP2950-33LPRE3 is a micropower low-dropout voltage regulator from onsemi that provides a fixed 3.3V output at up to 100mA. With an extremely low quiescent current of 75µA and dropout voltage of only 380mV at full load, it extends battery life in portable applications. The device features tight output accuracy of ±0.5%, excellent line and load regulation, and internal current/thermal limiting protection. It requires only a 1µF output capacitor for stability and can accept input voltages up to 30V.

The LP2950-33LPRE3 operates through three main subsystems: (1) Bandgap Reference: A precision 1.235V bandgap reference provides the internal voltage standard, trimmed to achieve ±0.5% initial accuracy. A resistor divider scales this to the 3.3V output. (2) Pass Element: A PNP pass transistor allows low dropout operation (380mV at 100mA) since the input-to-output differential need only overcome the VCE(sat) of the transistor, unlike NPN-based regulators that require at least 1.5-2V headroom. (3) Protection Circuits: Internal current limiting protects against output short circuits, while thermal shutdown prevents damage from excessive junction temperature. The regulator is stable with just 1µF output capacitance due to careful internal compensation.
