The LMR14030SDDAR from Texas Instruments is a 40V, 3.5A synchronous step-down (buck) DC-DC converter in a thermally-enhanced SO PowerPAD-8 package. The wide 4V to 40V input range accommodates automotive 12V/24V batteries and industrial 24V/36V supplies. The 3.5A output current supports medium-power loads including FPGAs, processors, and motor drivers. The programmable switching frequency from 200 kHz to 2.2 MHz allows designers to optimize between efficiency (lower frequency) and solution size (higher frequency). The 75 ns minimum on-time enables high step-down conversion ratios at high switching frequencies (e.g., 36V to 1.2V at 2.2 MHz). The 25 uA standby quiescent current and 1 uA shutdown current minimize battery drain in always-on applications. The integrated 70 mOhm NMOS power switch eliminates the need for an external MOSFET. Internal loop compensation simplifies the design. The PowerPAD package provides low thermal resistance for reliable operation at high output currents.

The LMR14030SDDAR uses a peak-current-mode control architecture with an integrated high-side NMOS power switch and a low-side NMOS synchronous rectifier. The control loop operates as follows: the error amplifier compares the feedback voltage (FB pin) with the internal 0.75V reference, generating a control voltage that sets the peak switch current threshold. At the start of each switching cycle, the high-side NMOS turns on and inductor current ramps up. When the inductor current reaches the peak threshold (set by the error amplifier), the high-side NMOS turns off and the low-side synchronous rectifier turns on, allowing inductor current to ramp down. The switching frequency is set by an external resistor on the RT pin, which programs an internal oscillator. The peak-current-mode control provides inherent cycle-by-cycle current limiting and fast transient response. The internal loop compensation network stabilizes the converter over a wide range of output capacitances and inductor values. The 25 uA standby mode is entered when the FB voltage drops below the regulation threshold, reducing switching frequency to maintain regulation with minimum switching losses.
