The LM317T from Texas Instruments is an adjustable 3-terminal positive voltage regulator capable of supplying over 1.5A over an output voltage range of 1.25V to 37V. Only two external resistors set the output voltage. Features internal current limiting, thermal shutdown, and safe operating area protection in a TO-220-3 package.

The LM317T from TI is an industry-standard adjustable 3-terminal positive voltage regulator. It supplies over 1.5A with proper heatsinking and output voltage is set by two external resistors: VOUT = 1.25V x (1 + R2/R1). Outstanding 0.01%/V line regulation and 0.1% load regulation. Comprehensive protection: current limiting, thermal shutdown, safe-area compensation.

Maintains 1.25V reference between OUTPUT and ADJUST pins. With R1 (OUT-ADJ) and R2 (ADJ-GND), VOUT = 1.25V x (1 + R2/R1) + IADJ x R2. Internal error amplifier adjusts NPN Darlington output to maintain regulation. Thermal shutdown at ~170°C. Current limit reduces output when input-output differential exceeds safe operating area.
