The LAN8710AI-EZK is a Microchip (formerly SMSC) 10/100 Ethernet physical layer transceiver (PHY) in a 32-pin QFN package. The device provides the physical layer function for 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX Ethernet, with RMII (Reduced Media Independent Interface) and MII MAC interface options selected at strap or register configuration. HP Auto-MDIX eliminates the need for crossover cables by automatically detecting and correcting the MDI/MDIX configuration. IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) support provides hardware timestamping for time-synchronized industrial Ethernet applications such as PROFINET and EtherCAT. The flexible I/O voltage (1.6V to 3.6V) allows direct connection to MACs operating at different voltage domains. Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) support reduces power consumption during idle periods. The MII management interface (MDIO/MDC) provides register access for configuration and status monitoring. The -I suffix indicates industrial temperature range (-40C to +85C). The EZK suffix indicates QFN-32 tape-and-reel packaging.

The LAN8710A implements the IEEE 802.3 physical layer for 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX. The 100BASE-TX transmitter performs 4B/5B encoding, scrambling, MLT-3 encoding, and digital-to-analog conversion of the transmit data from the MAC. The receiver performs the inverse: analog-to-digital conversion, MLT-3 decoding, descrambling, and 4B/5B decoding. The 10BASE-T mode uses Manchester encoding at 10Mbps. The RMII interface reduces the MAC-to-PHY pin count to 9 signals (TXD[1:0], RXD[1:0], TX_EN, CRS_DV, REF_CLK, MDIO, MDC) compared to 16 for MII. Auto-negotiation advertises and detects the highest common speed and duplex capability with the link partner. Auto-MDIX exchanges the transmit and receive pairs when a crossover condition is detected, eliminating cable polarity issues. The IEEE 1588 timestamping logic captures the precise time of packet transmission and reception for PTP synchronization. The MDIO/MDC management interface allows the MAC to read and write PHY configuration registers per Clause 22 of IEEE 802.3.
