The L9966CB-TR from STMicroelectronics is an AEC-Q100 qualified automotive FlexInput IC designed to replace multiple discrete signal conditioning components in Engine Control Units (ECUs) and body/chassis modules. The device provides 15 programmable input channels that can be individually configured for analog voltage sensing, precise resistance measurement, lambda (oxygen) sensor interface, SENT protocol reception, or digital switch detection. The 12-bit ADC performs voltage measurements with programmable input dividers, while the 15-bit ADC enables high-resolution resistance measurements for temperature sensors (NTC/PTC). The 4 SENT-capable channels support the SAE J2716 standard for digital sensor communication, with integrated GTM (Generic Timer Module) timestamping. Programmable pull-up and pull-down current sources eliminate the need for external biasing resistors. The Variable Reluctance Sensor (VRS) interface supports both VR and Hall-type speed/position sensors. The device operates from 5.5V to 36V battery supply, compatible with both 12V and 24V automotive systems. The SPI interface provides device configuration and data readback at up to 5MHz.

The L9966CB-TR operates as a configurable sensor interface between the automotive sensors and the MCU. Each of the 12 analog input channels can be independently routed through the internal switch matrix to one of several measurement paths: (1) the 12-bit ADC for voltage measurement via programmable voltage dividers; (2) the 15-bit ADC for resistance measurement by applying a known current through a programmable current source and measuring the resulting voltage; (3) the lambda sensor interface for wide-band oxygen sensor control; or (4) the SENT receiver for digital sensor data. The 3 digital input channels connect to the VPRE-clamped supply for switch detection. The SPI interface allows the MCU to configure the internal switch matrix, select current source values, initiate ADC conversions, and read back measurement results. The 4 SENT channels decode the SAE J2716 fast/slow serial pulse train and provide 4-bit nibble data with CRC verification. The VRS interface amplifies and conditions the low-level AC signal from a variable reluctance sensor, converting it to a digital pulse train for speed/position measurement. Over-temperature protection monitors the junction temperature and shuts down the device if it exceeds the safe limit.
