It features two independent multi-purpose UART/FIFO controllers that can be individually configured for various modes including UART, FIFO, bit-bang I/O, MPSSE (Multi-Protocol Synchronous Serial Engine) for JTAG/I2C/SPI, CPU-style FIFO, MCU host bus emulation, and fast opto-isolated serial. The FT2232D is a dual-channel USB to serial UART/FIFO interface IC developed by FTDI. As an updated version of the third-generation USB UART/FIFO family, it provides two independently configurable multi-purpose controllers that support UART, FIFO, bit-bang, MPSSE, CPU FIFO, MCU host bus emulation, and opto-isolated serial modes. The on-chip USB protocol handler eliminates the need for firmware development, while the integrated 3.3V LDO and PLL simplify external circuitry. With royalty-free VCP and D2XX drivers, the FT2232D significantly reduces development time for USB connectivity applications.

The FT2232D operates as a bridge between a USB host and two independent serial or parallel channels. The USB Serial Interface Engine (SIE) handles all USB protocol communication, including enumeration, data transfer, and power management. Each channel has its own configuration register set that determines the interface mode (UART, FIFO, MPSSE, etc.). In UART mode, data is buffered in 128-byte transmit and 384-byte receive FIFOs, with configurable baud rates up to 3 Mbaud. In MPSSE mode, the dedicated synchronous serial engine generates clock and data signals for JTAG, I2C, or SPI protocols without CPU intervention. The internal 3.3V LDO provides I/O voltage for USB signals, while independent level shifters allow each channel to operate at 5V or 3.3V logic levels.
