The FM31256-GTR is a 256Kbit (32KB) F-RAM (Ferroelectric RAM) from Infineon (formerly Ramtron) with integrated RTC and system supervisor in SOIC-8. The F-RAM stores data using ferroelectric polarization: a PZT (lead zirconate titanate) film holds each bit as the orientation of electric dipoles. Read/write operations complete in 70ns (vs. 5ms for EEPROM page writes), and the device supports 10^14 read/write cycles (vs. 10^5-10^6 for EEPROM) with 151-year data retention. The integrated RTC tracks time with 300nA battery-backup current. The system supervisor provides: a power-fail reset output (RST goes low when VDD drops below 2.63V), a programmable low-line comparator (CAL/PFO) for early warning of power failure, and a watchdog timer. The dual I2C interface allows the F-RAM and RTC to have separate I2C addresses, enabling independent access. The F-RAM is ideal for storing frequently updated data like meter readings, counters, and configuration parameters that would wear out EEPROM.
