The VLCF5020T-100M1R1-1 from TDK is a shielded wirewound power inductor with 10uH inductance, 1.1A rated current, and 155mOhm max DC resistance in a compact 5.0 x 5.0 x 2.0 mm surface-mount package. The magnetic shielded construction minimizes electromagnetic interference with adjacent components, enabling high-density PCB layouts. The wirewound construction provides high saturation current and low core losses for DC-DC converter applications. The 100M1R1-1 part number encodes: 100M = 10uH +/-20%, 1R1 = 1.1A rated current.

The VLCF5020T-100M1R1-1 operates as an energy storage inductor in DC-DC converter applications. (1) In a buck converter, the inductor stores energy during the switch-on period and releases it to the load during the switch-off period. The 10uH inductance determines the ripple current magnitude: delta-IL = (VIN – VOUT) x D / (fSW x L), where D is the duty cycle and fSW is the switching frequency. Higher inductance reduces ripple current and output voltage ripple. (2) The inductor must handle both the DC load current and the AC ripple current without saturating. The 1.1A saturation current (Isat) is defined as the DC current at which inductance drops by 30%. Exceeding this current causes core saturation, dramatically reducing inductance and potentially damaging the switching MOSFET. (3) The DC resistance (DCR) of 155mOhm determines the copper losses (P = IRMS2 x DCR). At full rated current, the copper loss is approximately 0.19W, contributing to the inductor temperature rise. The shielded construction uses a magnetic shield over the wirewound core to contain the magnetic flux within the component, reducing coupling to adjacent traces and components.
