The UCC5390SCD from Texas Instruments is a 5A/5A isolated gate driver designed for driving IGBTs and SiC MOSFETs in high-voltage power conversion applications. The 5000 Vrms reinforced isolation and 1200 Vpeak working voltage make it suitable for 1200V-class power modules used in motor drives, solar inverters, and EV chargers. The 5A peak source and sink current provides fast switching for SiC MOSFETs, minimizing switching losses. The 100 ns typical propagation delay enables high-frequency PWM operation up to 500 kHz. The dual UVLO (undervoltage lockout) on both input and output sides ensures the gate driver does not output a partial turn-on signal when supply voltages are insufficient. The device provides separate active-high (IN+) and active-low (IN-) inputs for flexible PWM signal interfacing, including direct differential signal reception. The SOIC-16 package provides the creepage and clearance distances required for reinforced isolation.

The UCC5390SCD uses capacitive isolation technology to transfer digital control signals across the galvanic isolation barrier. The input side receives the PWM signal and encodes it using on-off keying (OOK) modulation. The modulated signal crosses the SiO2 capacitive isolation barrier and is demodulated on the output side. The output stage consists of a push-pull buffer that can source 5A (pull-up transistor) and sink 5A (pull-down transistor) to rapidly charge and discharge the IGBT/SiC gate capacitance. The 100 ns propagation delay includes the OOK encoding, capacitive coupling, demodulation, and output buffer latency. The dual UVLO monitors both VCC1 (input side supply) and VCC2 (output side supply), disabling the output when either supply drops below the threshold. This prevents the output stage from entering a linear region where the IGBT/SiC could be partially turned on, causing excessive dissipation. The 15 ns maximum pulse width distortion ensures accurate PWM duty cycle reproduction at the gate.
