The Texas Instruments TPS92200D2DDCR is a synchronous buck LED driver providing 1.5A continuous output current from a 4V to 30V input in an ultra-compact SOT-23-Thin 6 package. The D2 variant supports deep analog dimming from 1% to 100% by converting the duty cycle of an external PWM signal (20-200 kHz) to an internal reference voltage, enabling smooth brightness control without visible flicker. The 99 mV feedback reference voltage minimizes power dissipation in the sense resistor compared to traditional 200-250 mV references. The synchronous rectifier (integrated low-side MOSFET) replaces the external Schottky catch diode, improving efficiency and reducing BOM count. Full internal compensation eliminates external loop compensation components, and the fixed 1 MHz switching frequency allows small inductor values for compact PCB layouts.

The TPS92200D2DDCR operates as a peak current-mode synchronous buck converter regulating LED current through a sense resistor (RSENSE) in series with the LED string. The voltage across RSENSE is compared to an internal reference voltage (VREF). In the D2 version, VREF is modulated by the DIM input: a PWM signal (20-200 kHz) applied to the DIM pin is filtered internally, and its duty cycle is converted to a proportional DC reference voltage. For example, 100% DIM duty cycle corresponds to VREF = 99 mV (full brightness), while 1% duty cycle corresponds to VREF = 0.99 mV (1% brightness). This analog dimming approach avoids the flicker associated with PWM dimming while maintaining the 1%-100% dimming range. The synchronous rectifier (integrated low-side NMOS) replaces the external Schottky diode, turning on during the off-time to provide a low-resistance freewheeling path for the inductor current. The peak current-mode control senses the high-side switch current through an internal sense element, comparing it to the error amplifier output on a cycle-by-cycle basis. The 1 MHz fixed switching frequency is internally set, requiring no external timing components. Protection circuits include LED open-circuit detection (FB voltage exceeds threshold), LED short-circuit detection, sense resistor open/short detection, and thermal shutdown at 165°C with 15°C hysteresis and automatic retry.
