The TPS7A7001DDAR from Texas Instruments is a 2A adjustable ultra-low-dropout LDO regulator in SO PowerPAD-8 package. The device operates from a minimum 1.425V input and provides adjustable output from 0.5V to 5V via external feedback resistor divider. The 380mV maximum dropout at 2A makes it ideal for applications where the output voltage is very close to the input. The enable pin allows shutdown with only 1uA quiescent current. The internal 0.5V reference with feedback divider sets the output voltage: VOUT = 0.5 x (1 + R1/R2). The SO PowerPAD package provides excellent thermal dissipation through the exposed pad. The DDAR suffix denotes SO PowerPAD-8 with tape and reel packaging at 2500 units per reel.

The TPS7A7001DDAR operates as a positive low-dropout linear regulator. (1) The pass element is a P-channel MOSFET between IN and OUT. The error amplifier compares a fraction of the output voltage (via the FB pin) with the internal 0.5V reference. The amplifier output drives the gate of the PMOS pass element to regulate the output. The output voltage is set by the external resistor divider: VOUT = 0.5V x (1 + R1/R2), where R2 connects from FB to GND and R1 connects from OUT to FB. TI recommends R2 = 30.1kOhm for optimal performance. (2) The ultra-low dropout voltage is achieved by the PMOS pass element, which requires only a small gate-to-source voltage to remain in saturation. At 2A load, the maximum dropout is 380mV, meaning the device can regulate 1.8V output from a 2.18V input. The dropout voltage increases with load current due to the RDS(ON) of the pass element. (3) The enable pin (EN) is active high. When EN is low, the pass element is turned off and the device draws only 1uA. When EN is high, the device regulates normally. The thermal shutdown circuit disables the output at approximately 160C junction temperature and re-enables at 140C, protecting the device from damage. The current limit circuit protects against output short circuits by limiting the output current to a safe level.
