The TPS74701 is a 500-mA low-dropout (LDO) linear regulator with programmable soft-start from Texas Instruments. It provides an easy-to-use, robust power management solution for a wide variety of applications. The user-programmable soft-start minimizes stress on the input power source by reducing capacitive inrush current on start-up. The soft-start is monotonic, designed for powering many different types of processors and ASICs. The enable input and power-good output allow easy sequencing with external regulators, meeting the requirements of FPGAs, DSPs, and other applications with special start-up requirements. A precision reference and error amplifier deliver 2% accuracy over load, line, temperature, and process.

The TPS74701 uses a P-channel MOSFET pass transistor controlled by an error amplifier that compares a fraction of the output voltage (via external feedback resistors) to a precision 0.804 V internal reference. The VBIAS supply powers the internal reference and control circuitry independently from VIN, enabling ultra-low VIN operation (down to 0.8 V) while maintaining excellent transient response. The programmable soft-start circuit uses an external capacitor (CSS) to control the output voltage ramp rate, ensuring monotonic start-up and reducing inrush current. The power-good (PG) comparator monitors the output voltage and asserts when regulation is within specified bounds, providing a sequencing signal for other supplies. Current limiting and thermal shutdown protect the device under fault conditions.
