The TPS63030DSKR from Texas Instruments is a high-efficiency buck-boost converter with 1.8A integrated switches in an ultra-compact WCSP-12 (2.5×2.5mm) package. The device operates from 1.8V to 5.5V input and provides a regulated output from 1.2V to 5.5V that can be above, below, or equal to the input voltage. This makes it ideal for single-cell Li-Ion battery applications where the output voltage (e.g., 3.3V) falls within the battery voltage range. The 2.5MHz switching frequency enables use of tiny chip inductors. Efficiency reaches up to 96% in buck mode, and a power-save mode maintains high efficiency at light loads. Quiescent current is only 30uA typical.

The TPS63030DSKR uses a four-switch buck-boost topology for seamless voltage regulation. (1) Buck Mode: When VIN > VOUT, the high-side switch (buck) and low-side switch (buck) operate as a standard buck converter. The boost switches remain off. (2) Boost Mode: When VIN < VOUT, the boost high-side and low-side switches operate as a boost converter. The buck high-side remains on. (3) Buck-Boost Mode: When VIN is approximately equal to VOUT, the controller uses all four switches in a combined buck-boost operation, seamlessly transitioning without output discontinuity. (4) Power-Save: At light loads, the device enters pulse-skipping mode where it delivers a burst of energy and then enters a low-Iq state, maintaining high efficiency. (5) Output Setting: The output voltage is set by an external resistor divider from VOUT to FB. The FB reference voltage is 0.5V.
