The TPS549D22RVFT is a Texas Instruments high-current synchronous step-down converter delivering up to 40A from 4.5V to 40V input. The integrated 3.5 mOhm high-side and 2.3 mOhm low-side MOSFETs minimize conduction losses for high efficiency at heavy loads. D-CAP3 control mode provides fast transient response with no external compensation required. The switching frequency is programmable from 500 kHz to 1.5 MHz via PMBus/I2C, allowing optimization of efficiency vs. solution size. The digital interface enables real-time monitoring of output voltage, current, and temperature, plus fault logging. Protection includes overcurrent, overvoltage, undervoltage, and thermal shutdown with auto-retry. The VQFN-HR package provides excellent thermal performance for 40A output.

The TPS549D22 uses D-CAP3 (Direct Control with Adaptive On-Time and 3rd Generation Emulated Ripple) control. An internal emulator generates a ripple signal that emulates the inductor current ripple, adding it to the output voltage feedback. This allows D-CAP3 to achieve stable operation with low-ESR ceramic output capacitors. The adaptive on-time adjusts the high-side MOSFET on-time based on input/output voltage ratio to maintain constant switching frequency across the operating range. At light loads, the device enters skip mode (pulse-frequency modulation) for high efficiency. The PMBus/I2C interface provides digital control of voltage margining, frequency, and fault thresholds, plus telemetry readback of output voltage, current, and die temperature.

VQFN-HR with key pins: VIN (input supply), SW (switch node), BOOT (bootstrap), VDD (5V bias), EN (enable), FB (feedback), PG (power-good), SCL/SDA (PMBus/I2C), SYNC (frequency sync), AGND/PGND (grounds), and thermal pad. Refer to datasheet for complete VQFN-HR pin mapping.
