The TLV62130RGTR from Texas Instruments is a 3A synchronous step-down DC-DC converter with 4V-17V input range in 3x3mm QFN-16 package. The device features TI’s proprietary DCS-Control architecture with 17uA typical quiescent current, providing the highest light-load efficiency in its class. The 2.5MHz default switching frequency allows use of small inductors and capacitors, minimizing total solution size. The converter operates in PFM mode at light loads for efficiency and transitions to PWM mode at heavier loads for low output ripple. The 100% duty cycle mode enables the output to approach the input voltage in dropout conditions. The RGT suffix denotes 3x3mm QFN-16 package with tape and reel.

The TLV62130RGTR operates as a synchronous buck converter using TI’s DCS-Control architecture. (1) DCS-Control (Direct Control with Seamless transition) is a proprietary control topology that combines the fast transient response of voltage-mode control with the stable operation of current-mode control. The error amplifier directly controls the on-time of the high-side MOSFET, adjusting it based on the output voltage error. This direct control path eliminates the current sense comparator delay, enabling faster transient response than traditional current-mode control. (2) At light loads, the device enters PFM (Pulse Frequency Modulation) mode where the switching frequency decreases proportionally to the load current. The high-side MOSFET switches on until the output exceeds the set point, then remains off until the output drops below the threshold. This discontinuous operation dramatically reduces switching losses and gate drive losses, achieving 17uA quiescent current. As the load increases, the transition to PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) mode is seamless without output voltage disturbance. (3) In dropout conditions (VIN close to VOUT), the device enters 100% duty cycle mode where the high-side MOSFET is continuously on and the low-side MOSFET is off. This minimizes the dropout voltage to just the RDS(ON) of the high-side FET times the load current (100mOhm x 3A = 300mV typical), allowing the output to track the input as closely as possible.
