The TLC5940NT is a 16-channel constant-current sink LED driver from Texas Instruments in a 28-pin PDIP through-hole package. Each of the 16 output channels features individually adjustable 12-bit (4096-step) grayscale PWM brightness control and 6-bit (64-step) dot correction, with dot correction data stored in integrated EEPROM for power-up consistency. The maximum output current per channel is set by a single external resistor on the IREF pin, up to 60mA when VCC is below 3.6V or 120mA when above 3.6V. LED supply voltage can be up to 17V, enabling driving of multiple series-connected LEDs. Error detection includes LED open detection (LOD) and thermal error flag (TEF) for diagnostic monitoring.

The TLC5940NT operates as a serially programmed constant-current sink driver. Data is clocked in via the SIN pin at up to 30MHz on the SCLK rising edge, with XLAT latching data into internal registers. Grayscale (GS) data is 192 bits wide (16 channels x 12 bits), while dot correction (DC) data is 96 bits wide (16 channels x 6 bits). The VPRG pin selects between GS mode (VPRG = GND) and DC programming mode (VPRG = VCC). The GSCLK pin serves as the PWM clock; each GSCLK cycle decrements the grayscale counter, and the output turns off when the counter reaches zero. Dot correction scales the maximum current per channel according to IOUT = IMAX x DCn/63, where IMAX = 31.5 x (1.24V / R_IREF). The BLANK pin forces all outputs off and resets GS counters. The XERR pin is an open-drain error flag indicating LOD or TEF conditions.
