The TL431AIDBZR is a three-terminal adjustable precision shunt regulator from Texas Instruments, housed in a compact SOT-23-3 (DBZ) package. The A suffix denotes 1% initial reference voltage accuracy at 25C.

The device provides an output voltage adjustable from 2.495V (Vref) to 36V using two external resistors. The internal bandgap reference voltage is nominally 2.495V with a typical output impedance of only 0.2 ohms, providing excellent load regulation. The sharp turn-on characteristic makes the TL431 an effective replacement for Zener diodes in many applications.

The TL431AIDBZR features a bandgap reference, error amplifier, and open-collector NPN output transistor in a single three-terminal device. The REF pin connects to the non-inverting input of the internal error amplifier. When the voltage at REF exceeds the internal 2.495V reference, the output transistor conducts, sinking cathode current and regulating the output voltage.

The DBZ (SOT-23-3) package has the following pin assignment (top view): Pin 1 = REF, Pin 2 = ANODE, Pin 3 = CATHODE. Note that the TL432 variant has a different pin assignment for the same package. The device marking code is CE% for TI production.

This is one of the most ubiquitous analog components in the electronics industry, found in virtually every switched-mode power supply (SMPS) as the secondary-side voltage reference in the optocoupler feedback loop.

The TL431AIDBZR operates as a three-terminal programmable shunt regulator combining a precision bandgap voltage reference, error amplifier, and open-collector output transistor in a single monolithic device.

Internal Architecture: The device contains three functional blocks: (1) a temperature-compensated bandgap reference that produces a stable 2.495V reference voltage, (2) a high-gain error amplifier that compares the voltage at the REF pin against the internal reference, and (3) an NPN output transistor whose collector is connected to the CATHODE terminal and whose emitter is connected to the ANODE terminal. The error amplifier output drives the base of the NPN transistor.

Shunt Regulation Principle: In the basic shunt regulator configuration, the CATHODE is connected through a series resistor (Rbias) to the positive supply, the ANODE is connected to ground, and the REF pin senses the output voltage through a resistor divider (R1 from cathode to REF, R2 from REF to anode). The output voltage is determined by: Vout = Vref x (1 + R1/R2), where Vref = 2.495V. When the output voltage rises above the set point, the voltage at REF exceeds the internal 2.495V reference, the error amplifier drives the NPN transistor harder, increasing cathode current through Rbias, which drops more voltage across Rbias and pulls the output voltage back down. Conversely, when the output voltage falls below the set point, cathode current decreases, less voltage drops across Rbias, and the output voltage rises.

Closed-Loop Operation: For stable closed-loop operation, the TL431 requires a minimum cathode current of 1 mA (some sources specify 400-700 uA) and a minimum load capacitance with appropriate ESR for phase margin. A common stability criterion requires that the load capacitance and ESR produce a zero in the loop transfer function within the appropriate frequency range. The data sheet provides stability boundary curves showing the allowed capacitance range versus ESR for different cathode currents.

Open-Loop (Comparator) Mode: The TL431 can also operate as a comparator with an integrated 2.495V reference. In this mode, the REF pin is driven directly by the signal to be monitored. When the signal exceeds 2.495V, the cathode conducts; when below 2.495V, the cathode is off. This is useful for overvoltage protection and voltage monitoring circuits.

Dynamic Impedance: The typical dynamic output impedance is 0.2 ohms when the device is operating in the active regulation region (cathode current above the minimum for regulation). This low impedance provides excellent load regulation, comparable to or better than many linear regulators.

Temperature Stability: The bandgap reference is designed for low temperature drift. For the A-grade I-temperature-range device, the typical drift is 14 mV over the -40C to +85C range. The temperature coefficient depends on the operating cathode voltage — at Vka = Vref (2.495V), the drift is minimized, while at higher cathode voltages, the drift increases proportionally.
