The TL16C752DPFBR from Texas Instruments is a dual universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter (UART) with 64-byte transmit and receive FIFOs in a TQFP-48 package. The device provides two independent UART channels, each with a programmable serial interface supporting RS-232, RS-485, and RS-422 modes. Maximum data rate is 10Mbps at 3.3V supply. Each channel has an independent baud rate generator, modem control interface, and programmable serial characteristics (data bits, stop bits, parity). The 64-byte FIFOs reduce CPU interrupt frequency and improve system throughput. Software and hardware flow control options prevent data overflow. The device supports IrDA SIR encoder/decoder for infrared communication. The parallel bus interface is compatible with Intel and Motorola bus timing.

The TL16C752DPFBR integrates two independent UART channels with FIFO buffering. (1) Transmitter: The CPU writes data to the TX FIFO via the parallel bus interface. The UART shifts data out on the TX pin at the programmed baud rate, adding start bit, parity, and stop bits. When the TX FIFO falls below the programmable threshold, an interrupt or DMA request is generated. (2) Receiver: Serial data on the RX pin is sampled and assembled into characters. The start bit detector synchronizes to the incoming data stream. Received characters are stored in the 64-byte RX FIFO. Framing, parity, and overrun errors are flagged. (3) Baud Rate Generator: Each channel has an independent programmable divisor that divides the reference clock to generate the desired baud rate. (4) Serial Interface: The transceiver control logic selects between RS-232 (single-ended), RS-485 (differential half-duplex), and RS-422 (differential full-duplex) output modes. (5) Flow Control: Hardware flow control uses RTS/CTS signals, while software flow control uses XON/XOFF characters.
