The TDA7388 from STMicroelectronics is a 4-channel class-AB audio power amplifier in a Flexiwatt-25 surface-mount package, designed primarily for car radio applications. The device provides four bridge-tied-load (BTL) output channels, each capable of delivering up to 41W into a 4 Ohm load at 14.4V supply. The BTL output configuration eliminates the need for large output coupling capacitors, reducing BOM cost and PCB area. The class-AB output stage achieves 0.05% typical THD at 1W output, providing high-quality audio reproduction. Built-in diagnostic features detect clipping, thermal warning, output short circuits, and overload conditions, and report status through a diagnostic pin. The standby function reduces current consumption to below 100uA, while the mute function silences the outputs without entering standby. The device operates from 8V to 18V, covering the full automotive battery voltage range including cold-crank and load-dump conditions. The Flexiwatt-25 package features an exposed thermal pad for direct heatsink attachment.

The TDA7388 uses complementary DMOS output stages in a bridge configuration. (1) Input Stage: Each channel has a differential input that accepts the audio signal. The input impedance is typically 100kOhm, compatible with standard head-unit line-level outputs. AC coupling is required at the input. (2) Voltage Amplifier: A high-gain voltage amplifier stage provides the signal amplification. The gain is internally set to approximately 26dB (20x). (3) Output Stage: Each BTL channel uses two complementary DMOS (double-diffused MOS) output transistors in a push-pull bridge configuration. The bridge drive doubles the voltage swing across the load compared to single-ended output, providing four times the output power for the same supply voltage and load impedance. (4) Diagnostic: A diagnostic comparator monitors output current and junction temperature. When an overload or fault is detected, the DIAG pin is pulled low. The device also reduces output power during thermal warning to prevent damage. (5) Standby/Mute: The STBY pin controls the standby mode (all circuitry disabled, 100uA current). The MUTE pin silences the outputs while keeping the internal bias active for faster unmute recovery.
