The TDA2030A is a monolithic class-AB audio power amplifier from STMicroelectronics capable of delivering 18W into a 4Ω load at ±14V supply. The device features very low 0.08% total harmonic distortion at 8W output into 8Ω, making it suitable for hi-fi applications. The wide supply range (±6V to ±18V or 12V to 36V single-ended) provides flexibility for car audio, desktop speakers, and portable systems. Built-in thermal shutdown at 145°C and short-circuit protection on all pins ensure robustness in end-user products. The 5-pin Pentawatt package requires minimal external components, typically just input/output coupling capacitors and feedback network.

The TDA2030A uses a class-AB output stage with a differential input pair and voltage gain stage. The input stage is a PNP differential pair that provides the high 5MΩ input impedance and low 2mV input offset voltage. The voltage gain stage amplifies the differential signal, driving the class-AB output stage through a Vbe multiplier that sets the output stage bias current for minimal crossover distortion. The class-AB output stage uses complementary NPN/PNP transistors that each conduct slightly more than half the output cycle, eliminating the crossover notch of pure class-B designs. The 80dB open-loop gain provides ample loop gain for the 30dB closed-loop configuration, reducing THD to 0.08%. The closed-loop gain is set by external feedback resistors, with a typical configuration using 22kΩ feedback and 680Ω ground reference for 30dB gain. The 8V/µs slew rate ensures full power bandwidth well above the audio range. The thermal shutdown circuit monitors the junction temperature and reduces the bias current when it exceeds 145°C, gracefully limiting power dissipation without sudden output cutoff.

TDA2030A is an 18W mono Class-AB audio power amplifier in PENTAWATT-5 (TO-220-5) package with ±18V maximum supply. The TDA2040 (22W) and TDA2050 (32W) scale output power in the same pinout. For modern Class-D efficiency, TPA3116D2 offers 50W stereo at 92% efficiency. The TDA2030A requires only 5 external components and includes thermal shutdown and short-circuit protection.
