The ST1480ABDR from STMicroelectronics is a 3.3V low-power RS-485/RS-422 half-duplex transceiver supporting data rates up to 20Mbps. Designed for 3.3V systems, the device eliminates the need for a 5V supply that traditional RS-485 transceivers require, simplifying power supply design in modern low-voltage systems. The 1/8 unit load receiver input impedance allows up to 256 transceivers on a single RS-485 bus, enabling large network installations in industrial and building automation applications. The extended bus common-mode range of -7V to +12V provides robust operation in noisy industrial environments where ground potential differences can be significant. The true fail-safe receiver feature ensures a logic high output when the receiver inputs are open (disconnected bus) or shorted together, preventing undefined receiver states during bus idle periods. The device supports data rates up to 20Mbps for high-speed RS-485 applications, and the driver output slew rate is optimized for reduced EMI while maintaining fast edge rates for high data rates. ESD protection of +/-15kV on the bus pins (A, B) provides robust protection against electrostatic discharge events. The hot-swap capability on the driver and receiver enable inputs prevents bus disturbance during circuit power-up or hot insertion. The ST1480ABDR is available in an 8-pin SOIC package and is pin-compatible with many industry-standard RS-485 transceivers.

The ST1480ABDR operates as a 3.3V half-duplex RS-485/RS-422 transceiver. Key subsystems include: (1) Driver Section – when DE is high, the driver converts single-ended DI input into differential output on the A/B bus lines; the differential output voltage is guaranteed at least 1.5V across a 54-ohm load (RS-422) or 1.5V across a 27-ohm load (RS-485); the driver output slew rate is optimized for the 20Mbps data rate; when DE is low, the driver outputs are three-stated; (2) Receiver Section – when RE is low, the receiver compares the differential voltage (VA-VB) against +/-200mV thresholds; if VA-VB > 200mV, RO is high; if VA-VB < -200mV, RO is low; the true fail-safe feature ensures RO is high when inputs are open or shorted (VA=VB); when RE is high, RO is three-stated; (3) 3.3V Operation – the entire device operates from a 3.0V to 3.6V supply, compatible with 3.3V logic; the bus driver outputs still meet RS-485 voltage specifications despite the lower supply; (4) Hot-Swap – when VCC ramps up or the device is hot-inserted, internal circuitry holds DE and RE pins in a defined state until VCC is stable, preventing spurious bus activity; (5) ESD Protection – the bus pins (A, B) have dedicated ESD clamp structures rated for +/-15kV HBM.
