The TDA2030A from STMicroelectronics is an 18W Hi-Fi audio power amplifier in a Pentawatt-5 package. Operating from +/-6V to +/-22V, it delivers up to 18W into 4 Ohm with 0.08% typical THD. Internal thermal and short-circuit protection make it nearly indestructible in typical audio circuits.

The TDA2030A from STMicroelectronics is a monolithic audio power amplifier in a Pentawatt-5 package capable of delivering 18W output power into a 4 Ohm load with only 0.08% typical total harmonic distortion. Operating from split supplies of +/-6V to +/-22V, it provides excellent sound quality for Hi-Fi applications. The device includes comprehensive protection: thermal shutdown activates when junction temperature exceeds approximately 150C, and output short-circuit protection limits current to a safe level. The 3.5A peak output current enables driving low-impedance loads. Two TDA2030A devices can be connected in bridge-tied-load (BTL) configuration to deliver up to 36W into 4 Ohm. The device requires minimal external components for a complete amplifier circuit.

The TDA2030A uses a class AB output stage with a differential input pair. The input stage accepts both inverting and non-inverting signals, enabling flexible gain configuration. The class AB output stage uses complementary NPN and PNP power transistors with bias circuitry to minimize crossover distortion. The output stage includes current-sensing for short-circuit protection: when output current exceeds the threshold, the drive is reduced to limit current. Thermal protection uses a temperature-sensing circuit that monitors die temperature and disables the output stage when it exceeds the safe limit. The frequency compensation is internal, requiring no external compensation capacitor. The 140kHz bandwidth ensures phase margin and flat frequency response across the audio band.
