SN74HC595N Overview

The SN74HC595N is an 8-bit shift register with output latches and 3-state outputs from Texas Instruments, supply voltage 2V-6V, maximum clock frequency 52MHz at 5V, in a DIP-16 through-hole package, widely used for LED matrix driving and I/O expansion.

The SN74HC595N is an 8-bit serial-in, parallel-out shift register with 3-state output registers from Texas Instruments, packaged in a 16-pin PDIP through-hole format. It features a wide 2 V to 6 V operating voltage range, 13 ns typical propagation delay, and plus or minus 6 mA output drive at 5 V. The device contains an 8-bit shift register that feeds an 8-bit D-type storage register with parallel 3-state outputs, allowing the shift register and output register to operate independently. With separate clocks, direct clear, serial output for cascading, and output enable control, it is a versatile logic building block for I/O expansion and LED driving.

The SN74HC595N consists of two independently clocked 8-bit registers. Data is shifted into the 8-bit shift register on the rising edge of the shift register clock (SRCLK). Each rising edge moves the existing data one position and loads the SER input into the first stage. The shift register output (QH prime) provides the cascaded serial output for daisy-chaining multiple devices. On the rising edge of the register clock (RCLK), the contents of the shift register are transferred to the 8-bit storage register. The storage register outputs (QA through QH) are enabled when the output enable (OE) input is low; when OE is high, the outputs are in a high-impedance state. The shift register clear (SRCLR) input, when low, resets all shift register stages to low independently of the clocks. This dual-register architecture allows new data to be shifted in while the current output pattern remains stable, eliminating output flicker during updates. Multiple devices can be cascaded by connecting QH prime of one device to SER of the next, sharing SRCLK and RCLK across all devices.

SN74HC595N is an 8-bit shift register with 3-state output from TI in PDIP-16. The SN74HC595DR is the SOIC-16 surface-mount version with identical functionality. 74HC595D from Nexperia provides the same function in SOIC-16. For higher voltage, CD4094BE offers 3-18V CMOS operation in DIP-16. For cascaded designs, the QH prime output enables daisy-chaining. TLC6C598 is a constant-current LED driver version for display applications.
