The SN74HC245DWR from Texas Instruments is an octal bus transceiver with 3-state outputs designed for asynchronous bidirectional communication between data buses. The device allows data transmission from the A bus to the B bus or from the B bus to the A bus, depending on the logic level at the direction-control (DIR) input. The output-enable (OE) input can be used to disable the device, effectively isolating the buses. With a wide operating voltage range of 2V to 6V, the device is compatible with both 3.3V and 5V systems. The high-current 3-state outputs can drive bus lines directly or up to 15 LSTTL loads. Low power consumption of 80uA maximum ICC makes it suitable for power-sensitive applications. The device features a typical propagation delay of 12ns and non-inverting data path. It is available in a 20-pin SOIC package rated for -40 to 85 C operation.

The SN74HC245DWR operates as a bidirectional bus switch with tri-state outputs. Key subsystems include: (1) Direction Control Logic – the DIR input selects whether data flows from A-to-B (DIR=HIGH) or B-to-A (DIR=LOW); (2) Output Enable Logic – the active-low OE input controls the 3-state output buffers; when OE is HIGH, all outputs are high-impedance, isolating the buses; (3) Eight Bidirectional Channels – each channel consists of a pair of tri-state buffers with complementary enable logic ensuring only one direction is active at a time; (4) Input Clamp Diodes – provide protection against voltage overshoot and enable interfacing with voltages exceeding VCC through current-limiting resistors. The non-inverting architecture preserves data polarity through the transceiver.
