The SMS-R010-1.0 from Isabellenhuette (ISA) is a 10 mOhm precision metal alloy current sense resistor from the SMS series, offering +/-1% tolerance, a low temperature coefficient of +/-30 ppm/C, and a high 5W power rating in a 2512 (6.35 x 3.10 mm) surface-mount package. Isabellenhuette is a renowned German manufacturer of precision resistive elements, and the SMS series represents their SMD current sensing product line using proprietary bulk metal alloy technology. The solid metal alloy element provides exceptional long-term stability, very low inductance (<5 nH typical), and low thermal EMF (<1 uV/K), making it suitable for both high-frequency AC and precision DC current measurement applications. The 4-terminal (Kelvin) pad layout eliminates solder joint resistance from the measurement path. AEC-Q200 qualified and rated for operation from -55C to +170C, the SMS-R010-1.0 is designed for demanding automotive and industrial current sensing applications where both accuracy and power handling are critical.

The SMS-R010-1.0 operates as a precision shunt resistor where current flowing through the 10 mOhm resistive element produces a proportional voltage drop (V = I x R). For a 10A current, the sense voltage is 100 mV, which falls within the optimal input range of most current sense amplifiers. The bulk metal alloy element is manufactured using Isabellenhuette’s proprietary metal alloy composition that provides a near-zero temperature coefficient at the operating point, resulting in the specified +/-30 ppm/C TCR. The low thermal EMF (<1 uV/K) is achieved by using matched materials at the metal-to-substrate interface, preventing thermocouple effects that would introduce DC offset errors in precision measurements. The 4-terminal Kelvin connection separates the current-carrying terminals from the voltage-sensing terminals, ensuring that the measured voltage represents only the voltage drop across the resistive element itself, not across the solder joints or PCB traces. The 5W power rating allows the resistor to handle continuous currents up to approximately 22A while maintaining the specified +/-1% resistance tolerance over the full automotive temperature range.
