The SFH6286-3T from Vishay Semiconductors is a high-reliability optocoupler housed in an SMD-4 gull wing package. It features a GaAs infrared LED optically coupled to a silicon phototransistor, providing electrical isolation up to 5300 Vrms. The device achieves a current transfer ratio (CTR) of 100-320% at 1 mA forward current (Grade 3 bin), making it suitable for low-current drive applications. The SMD-4 package with option 7 provides creepage and clearance distances suitable for reinforced insulation per IEC 60950 at operating voltages up to 400 VRMS. The device carries UL, cUL, BSI, FIMKO, and CQC safety approvals, and exhibits low CTR degradation over extended operation.

The SFH6286-3T operates by converting an electrical input signal to infrared light via the GaAs LED, which is then detected by the silicon phototransistor on the output side. The optical coupling provides galvanic isolation between input and output circuits. When forward current flows through the LED, emitted photons are absorbed by the phototransistor base region, generating base current that drives the collector current. The CTR (Current Transfer Ratio) of 100-320% indicates the output collector current is 1-3.2 times the input LED current at 1 mA IF. The device maintains isolation integrity through the optically transparent but electrically insulating dielectric between LED and detector dice.
