The SCF31B series is designed for DC-DC converter applications where magnetic shielding is required to prevent EMI coupling to nearby sensitive circuits. The SCF31B-180-S1R7A013J operates as a shielded drum core power inductor. The construction consists of a ferrite drum core (center post with top plate) wound with copper wire and enclosed by a ferrite shield cap. The magnetic flux flows through the center post, across the air gap to the top plate, and returns through the ferrite shield, forming a closed magnetic circuit. This shielding contains the magnetic field within the inductor body, reducing EMI radiation by 10-20dB compared to unshielded drum core inductors. The ferrite material is formulated for low core loss at high frequencies (1-5MHz), allowing efficient operation at the switching frequencies common in modern DC-DC converters.
