The Renesas R5F1026AASP is a member of the RL78/G12 family of ultra-low-power 16-bit microcontrollers designed for cost-sensitive sensor and control applications. With 16 KB Flash, 1.5 KB RAM, and 2 KB data Flash with background operation (BGO) capability, it provides sufficient code and data storage for sensor interfacing and simple control algorithms. The RL78 core achieves 31 DMIPS at 24 MHz while consuming only 63 µA/MHz in active mode and 230 nA in STOP mode, making it one of the most power-efficient MCUs in its class. The wide 1.8V to 5.5V operating range supports direct battery operation and 5V system interfacing without level shifters. The 11-channel 10-bit ADC with internal reference voltage eliminates the need for an external voltage reference in many sensor applications.

The R5F1026AASP is based on the RL78 16-bit CISC core with a 3-stage pipeline achieving 31 DMIPS at 24 MHz. The core supports 78K legacy instructions and RL78 extended instructions including bit manipulation and multiply-accumulate operations. The on-chip high-speed oscillator provides factory-trimmed frequencies from 1 MHz to 24 MHz with ±1% accuracy, eliminating the need for an external crystal in many applications. The 10-bit ADC uses a successive approximation register (SAR) architecture with an internal reference voltage (1.45V typical), allowing single-ended measurements on 11 external channels. The data Flash memory (2 KB) supports background operation (BGO), meaning the CPU can continue executing code from ROM while data Flash is being erased or programmed. The multiple low-power modes include HALT (CPU stopped, peripherals running), STOP (all oscillators stopped, 230 nA), and SNOOZE (periodic ADC conversion while in STOP mode). The IEC/UL 60730 compliance is supported through a class B software library that performs runtime checks of CPU registers, RAM, Flash, and clock frequency.
