The PT334-6C from Everlight Electronics is a high-speed, high-sensitivity NPN epitaxial planar phototransistor in a standard 5mm (T 1-3/4) radial through-hole package with water clear epoxy. The device is spectrally matched to 940nm IR emitters with a spectral response range of 400nm to 1100nm. The water clear epoxy provides maximum IR light transmission with minimal absorption. The 15us typical rise/fall time enables high-speed optical sensing applications. The 3.5mA typical on-state collector current at 1mW/cm2 irradiance provides strong signal output. The device is halogen-free, RoHS compliant, and REACH compliant.

The PT334-6C operates as an NPN phototransistor. (1) The epitaxial planar NPN structure has a base region that is exposed to incident light through the water clear epoxy encapsulation. When infrared photons (peak 940nm) strike the base-collector junction, they generate electron-hole pairs through the photoelectric effect. The photogenerated carriers are amplified by the transistor’s current gain (hFE), producing a collector current proportional to the incident light intensity. (2) The on-state collector current of 3.5mA typical at 1mW/cm2 irradiance provides a strong output signal that can directly drive logic inputs or be further amplified. The 0.4V maximum saturation voltage at 2mA collector current ensures compatibility with digital logic thresholds. (3) The 15us rise/fall time is determined by the carrier transit time in the base region and the load resistance. The 100nA maximum dark current at VCE=20V ensures low noise in the absence of IR illumination. The water clear epoxy lens provides a 20-degree half-angle viewing cone for directional sensing.
