The Kiwi Instruments P522308 (KP522308E) is a high-efficiency synchronous step-down DC-DC converter that integrates both power MOSFETs and control circuitry in a compact TSOT23-6 package. Operating from a 4.5V to 30V input range, it delivers up to 2A continuous output current with an adjustable output voltage from 0.6V to 16V. The integrated 72mΩ high-side and 35mΩ low-side MOSFETs achieve high efficiency across the load range. The KP522308E variant uses forced PWM (FPWM) mode at light loads, maintaining a fixed 500kHz switching frequency and low output voltage ripple regardless of load current — ideal for noise-sensitive applications. This contrasts with the KP522302E variant which uses PFM mode for higher light-load efficiency. Peak current mode control with internal compensation ensures stable operation with minimal external components. A 5ms internal soft start limits inrush current during startup, while the EN pin provides precision enable control and programmable input UVLO.

The KP522308E uses a peak current mode control architecture for the synchronous buck converter topology. During each switching cycle, the high-side NMOS (72mΩ) turns on, connecting the input voltage to the output inductor, causing inductor current to ramp up. When the peak inductor current reaches the error amplifier-controlled threshold, the high-side FET turns off and the low-side NMOS (35mΩ) turns on, providing a freewheeling path for inductor current. The peak current mode loop compares the output voltage (divided down to the 0.6V feedback reference) with the internal reference and adjusts the peak current setpoint to regulate the output. The forced PWM mode ensures the low-side FET operates in CCM (continuous conduction mode) even at light loads by allowing negative inductor current, maintaining a fixed 500kHz switching frequency. Slope compensation is internally generated to prevent sub-harmonic oscillation at duty cycles above 50%. The internal 5ms soft start gradually ramps the current limit from zero to full scale, preventing output voltage overshoot during startup.
