The NFM21PC474R1C3D from Murata is a three-terminal feed-through multilayer ceramic capacitor designed specifically for EMI filtering on power supply lines. Unlike conventional two-terminal MLCCs, the three-terminal structure routes the signal current through the capacitor body while grounding the noise, resulting in dramatically lower equivalent series inductance (ESL) and superior high-frequency noise attenuation. With 0.47uF of capacitance in a compact 0805 footprint, the NFM21PC474R1C3D provides effective filtering from the kHz range well into the GHz range. The device is rated for 16V DC and 2A DC, with a maximum DC resistance of 30m ohm to minimize voltage drop on the power line. The component meets AEC-Q200 automotive qualification standards, ensuring reliability in harsh automotive environments with operating temperatures from -55C to +125C.

The NFM21PC474R1C3D operates as a feed-through filter capacitor. In the three-terminal configuration, the signal line enters at Terminal 1 (input), passes through the capacitor body, and exits at Terminal 3 (output), while Terminal 2 connects the capacitor electrodes to ground. This structure forces the high-frequency noise current to flow through the low-impedance path to ground via the capacitor, while the DC and low-frequency signal current passes through the series path with only 30m ohm of DC resistance. The key advantage over two-terminal capacitors is that the parasitic inductance of the signal path is not in series with the capacitor, but rather the capacitor is between the signal line and ground. This means the self-resonant frequency is much higher, and effective filtering extends to much higher frequencies, typically providing 20dB or more insertion loss at 100MHz and above.
