NE555P

The NE555P from Texas Instruments is the original and most iconic timer IC, designed by Hans Camenzind at Signetics in 1971 and still in active production. It can operate in two fundamental modes: monostable (one-shot) produces a single pulse of precise duration t = 1.1×R×C when triggered; astable (free-running) generates a continuous square wave with frequency f = 1.44/((R1+2R2)×C) and duty cycle = (R1+R2)/(R1+2R2). The 200mA output can directly drive relays, LEDs, small speakers, and TTL/CMOS logic without a buffer. The internal voltage divider sets the trigger at 1/3 VCC and threshold at 2/3 VCC; these levels can be modified through the control voltage pin for PWM or modulation applications. The reset pin (active LOW) overrides all other inputs, forcing the output LOW. The P suffix denotes the PDIP-8 plastic through-hole package.

The NE555P contains two comparators, an SR flip-flop, a discharge transistor, a resistive voltage divider (three 5kΩ resistors in series from VCC to GND), and an output buffer stage. The voltage divider sets the upper comparator (threshold) reference at 2/3 VCC and the lower comparator (trigger) reference at 1/3 VCC. In monostable mode: initially, the output is LOW and the discharge transistor is ON (shorting the timing capacitor to GND). When the trigger input drops below 1/3 VCC, the lower comparator sets the flip-flop, the output goes HIGH, and the discharge transistor turns OFF. The capacitor charges through the timing resistor R toward VCC. When the capacitor voltage reaches 2/3 VCC, the upper comparator resets the flip-flop, the output goes LOW, and the discharge transistor turns ON, rapidly discharging the capacitor. The output pulse width is t = 1.1×R×C (the factor 1.1 accounts for the ratio of 2/3 VCC and the charging time constant). In astable mode: the capacitor charges through R1+R2 and discharges through R2 only. When charging, the output is HIGH; when the capacitor reaches 2/3 VCC, the output goes LOW and the capacitor discharges through R2. When it reaches 1/3 VCC, the output goes HIGH again. The charge time is 0.693×(R1+R2)×C and the discharge time is 0.693×R2×C. The duty cycle is always >50% because R2 is common to both charge and discharge paths; to achieve 50% duty cycle, a diode across R2 bypasses it during charging.

NE555P uses the PDIP-8 package with the classic 555 timer pinout: Pin 1 = GND, Pin 2 = TRIG (trigger, active-low at 1/3 VCC), Pin 3 = OUT (output, can sink/source 200mA), Pin 4 = RESET (active-low override, normally tied to VCC), Pin 5 = CTRL (control voltage, bypass with 10nF to GND for noise immunity), Pin 6 = THR (threshold, triggers at 2/3 VCC), Pin 7 = DISCH (open-collector discharge, connects timing cap to GND), Pin 8 = VCC (4.5-16V). In monostable mode, TRIG (Pin 2) receives the trigger pulse, THR+DISCH (Pins 6+7) connect through the timing resistor to VCC, and the timing capacitor connects from Pins 6+7 to GND. In astable mode, Pins 2+6 are tied together, with two resistors and a capacitor setting the frequency.

NE555 is the industry-standard precision timer generating accurate time delays from microseconds to hours. It operates in both astable (oscillator) and monostable (one-shot) modes. CMOS versions (TLC555, LMC555) offer 2-15V supply and 1µA standby for battery applications. The NE556 provides dual timers in DIP-14. SA555 extends temperature range to 125C for automotive use.
