A timer-based auto-recovery short-circuit protection mechanism safeguards the converter during fault conditions, while a latched over-voltage protection on the VCC pin protects against optocoupler failure or open-loop operation. The internal 4 ms soft-start ensures controlled startup without output overshoot. Frequency jittering in both normal and foldback modes reduces EMI filter requirements.

The NCP1253BSN100T1G operates as a peak current-mode controller with three key subsystems: (1) The oscillator and jitter block generates the 100 kHz clock with low-frequency modulation for EMI reduction. The frequency foldback circuit reduces the switching frequency to 26 kHz when the FB pin voltage drops below a threshold, and further enters skip-cycle mode at very light loads to minimize standby power. (2) The current sense and slope compensation subsystem monitors the primary peak current through the CS pin. An external resistor in series with the sense resistor introduces slope compensation to prevent sub-harmonic oscillation in CCM operation. The leading edge blanking (LEB) suppresses turn-on spikes. (3) The protection subsystem includes a timer-based OCP that counts fault events and auto-recovers after a cool-down period, and a VCC OVP comparator that latches the converter off when VCC exceeds the threshold, protecting against output overvoltage due to optocoupler destruction.
