The NCP1117ST33T3G from onsemi is a low-dropout positive linear voltage regulator capable of providing output current in excess of 1.0 A with a fixed 3.3 V output. The device features a maximum dropout voltage of 1.2 V at 800 mA over the full operating temperature range, making it suitable for applications where the input-to-output differential is limited. On-chip trimming adjusts the output voltage to within +/-1.0% accuracy, significantly tighter than industry-standard 1117 regulators. Internal protection features include output current limiting, safe operating area compensation, and thermal shutdown, ensuring reliable operation under fault conditions. The NCP1117 series can operate with input voltages up to 20 V and does not require a minimum load to maintain regulation. The SOT-223 package provides excellent thermal performance with a junction-to-case thermal resistance that supports full 1 A output when properly heat-sinked on the PCB copper area.

The NCP1117ST33T3G operates as a series-pass linear regulator with three main functional blocks: (1) The bandgap reference generates a precise internal voltage of approximately 1.25 V, trimmed during manufacturing to achieve the +/-1.0% output accuracy. For the fixed 3.3 V version, internal resistor dividers scale the reference to produce the regulated output. (2) The error amplifier compares a fraction of the output voltage (sensed through the internal divider) with the bandgap reference. The amplifier output drives the base of the series-pass transistor, adjusting the conductance to maintain the output at the target 3.3 V. The pass transistor operates in the linear region, dissipating excess voltage as heat. (3) The protection circuitry includes current limiting that restricts the pass transistor current to a safe level during overload, safe operating area (SOA) compensation that reduces the current limit at high input-output differentials, and thermal shutdown that disables the output when the junction temperature exceeds approximately 175°C.
