The Macronix MX25L3233FM2I-08G is a 32Mb Serial NOR Flash memory device from the MXSMIO (Serial Multi I/O) product family. It provides flexible interface options including standard SPI, Dual Output SPI, Dual I/O SPI, Quad Output SPI, and Quad I/O SPI, enabling system designers to scale read performance from single data rate up to 4x throughput. With a maximum clock frequency of 133MHz in Quad I/O mode, the device achieves effective read bandwidth exceeding 50MB/s, suitable for execute-in-place (XIP) applications. The device is organized as 4,194,304 x 8 bits internally, with sector architecture of 1024 x 4KB sectors, 128 x 32KB blocks, and 64 x 64KB blocks. The 256-byte page programming buffer supports fast page program operations with 1.2ms maximum program time. Program Suspend/Resume allows interruption of a page program to perform read operations in other sectors, critical for real-time systems. The 4K-bit secured OTP area provides a unique identifier and customer-lockable storage for security keys. AEC-Q100 qualification ensures reliability in automotive environments.

The MX25L3233F uses a standard SPI command protocol where the host initiates operations by driving CS# low and clocking in a command byte followed by address and data bytes through the SI pin. In Quad I/O mode, pins SI, SO, WP#, and HOLD# all become bidirectional data lines (SIO0-SIO3), quadrupling data throughput. Read operations access the 75nm NOR Flash cell array through a sense amplifier and output pipeline. Program operations use a page buffer that loads 256 bytes before the internal algorithm applies high-voltage programming pulses to the selected page. Erase operations apply Fowler-Nordheim tunneling to remove charge from floating gates across an entire sector (4KB), block (32KB/64KB), or the full chip. The suspend/resume mechanism saves internal state when a program or erase is paused, allowing read access to non-conflicting address ranges. The 5.8V internal charge pump generates the high voltage needed for program and erase from the 2.65-3.6V supply, eliminating the need for external high-voltage supplies.
