The MP28164GD-Z is a Monolithic Power Systems high-efficiency single-inductor buck-boost converter with integrated 4.2A switches. It seamlessly transitions between buck, boost, and buck-boost modes to maintain regulation when the input voltage is above, below, or near the output voltage. The 1.2V to 5.5V input range and 1.5V to 5V adjustable output make it ideal for single-cell Li-ion or multi-cell alkaline battery applications. At 2.5V to 5.5V input, it delivers up to 2A at 3.3V output. The 2MHz fixed switching frequency allows tiny inductors and capacitors. The 25uA quiescent current and selectable PFM skip mode extend battery life at light loads. Internal soft-start, compensation, power-good output, hiccup short-circuit protection, and over-temperature protection are included. Packaged in QFN-11 (2×3 mm).

The MP28164 uses a single-inductor 4-switch buck-boost topology with four integrated MOSFETs (SWA/SWB for buck, SWC/SWD for boost). A fixed-frequency current-mode PWM controller determines the operating mode based on VIN vs VOUT. When VIN > VOUT, it operates in buck mode (SWA/SWB switch, SWD on, SWC off). When VIN < VOUT, it operates in boost mode (SWC/SWD switch, SWA on, SWB off). When VIN is near VOUT, it enters buck-boost mode where all four switches operate. The seamless transition between modes prevents output voltage glitches. At light loads, PFM skip mode reduces switching frequency to maintain high efficiency, while PWM mode provides lowest output ripple at heavy loads.

QFN-11 with key pins: VIN (input supply), SW (switch node to inductor), VOUT (output), FB (feedback for output voltage setting), EN (enable), PG (power-good), MODE (PSM/PWM mode select), SLEEP (sleep control), GND (ground), and exposed thermal pad. Refer to datasheet for complete 11-pin QFN mapping.
