The MIC5219-3.3YM5-TR from Microchip Technology is a 500mA fixed 3.3V low-dropout regulator in SOT-23-5 package. The device features 500mV typical dropout at 500mA, 70dB PSRR at 1kHz, 100uVrms output noise, and 0.01uA standby current when disabled via the enable pin. The fixed 3.3V output eliminates the need for external feedback resistors, reducing BOM count. Comprehensive protection includes current limit, thermal shutdown, and reverse-battery protection. The YM5-TR suffix denotes SOT-23-5 package with tape and reel packaging. The device is widely used in mobile phones, USB peripherals, and RF modules requiring a clean, low-noise 3.3V supply.

The MIC5219-3.3YM5-TR operates as a fixed-output positive LDO voltage regulator. (1) The pass element is a PNP transistor between IN and OUT. The error amplifier compares a fraction of the output voltage (via an internal resistor divider for the fixed 3.3V version) with an internal bandgap reference. The amplifier output drives the base of the PNP pass transistor to regulate the output. The PNP architecture allows the dropout voltage to be as low as VCE(sat) of the pass transistor, typically 500mV at 500mA. (2) The enable pin (EN) is active high. When EN is low, the pass transistor is fully off and the device draws only 0.01uA from the input supply. This near-zero standby current is critical for battery-powered applications where the regulator may be disabled for extended periods. When EN is high, the device regulates normally with 1.8mA typical quiescent current. (3) The 70dB PSRR at 1kHz means that 1V of input ripple is attenuated to 0.3mV at the output, making the device ideal for post-regulation after a switching converter. The 100uVrms output noise (10Hz-100kHz) ensures clean supply for noise-sensitive analog and RF circuits. The internal current limit protects against output short circuits, while the thermal shutdown protects against excessive junction temperature. The reverse-battery protection prevents damage if the input supply is accidentally reversed.
