The MCP3424-E/SL from Microchip Technology is an 18-bit delta-sigma ADC with 4 differential input channels, on-board 2.048V reference, programmable gain amplifier, and I2C interface. The device provides selectable resolution/sample-rate combinations: 18-bit at 3.75 SPS for maximum precision, down to 12-bit at 240 SPS for faster measurements. The on-board PGA with gains of 1x, 2x, 4x, and 8x allows direct measurement of small signals (down to ±256mV full-scale at 8x gain) without external amplifiers. The 2.048V reference has 0.05% initial accuracy and 15 ppm/°C drift. Self-calibration of offset and gain is performed automatically on each conversion, ensuring accuracy over temperature and supply variations. One-shot mode reduces power to 36µA at 1 SPS. Two address pins (A0, A1) allow up to four MCP3424 devices on one I2C bus. The E/SL suffix denotes the extended temperature range (-40°C to +125°C) and SOIC-14 package.

The MCP3424-E/SL uses a third-order delta-sigma modulator followed by a digital decimation filter. The analog input is first selected by the input multiplexer (one of four differential pairs), then amplified by the programmable gain amplifier (PGA). The delta-sigma modulator oversamples the input at a high rate and produces a 1-bit data stream. The digital decimation filter processes this bitstream to produce a multi-bit output word. The resolution and output data rate are set by the decimation ratio: higher decimation yields more bits but slower output. At 18-bit mode (3.75 SPS), the modulator runs at a high oversampling ratio, and the digital filter produces 18-bit results with very low noise. The on-board 2.048V reference sets the full-scale range: at PGA=1, the differential input range is ±2.048V; at PGA=8, it is ±256mV. The self-calibration circuit measures and cancels internal offset and gain errors on every conversion, which maintains accuracy over temperature without user intervention. In one-shot mode, the device performs a single conversion and then enters low-power standby; the master reads the result via I2C. In continuous mode, the device converts repeatedly and the master can read the latest result at any time.
