The MAX3232IDR from Texas Instruments is a 3V to 5.5V multichannel RS-232 line driver and receiver with +/-15kV ESD HBM protection on all bus pins. The device consists of two line drivers, two line receivers, and a dual charge-pump circuit. The charge pump and four small 0.1uF external capacitors allow operation from a single 3V to 5.5V supply, generating the +/-5.4V output swing required by the RS-232 standard. The device meets TIA/EIA-232-F requirements and operates at data rates up to 250kbps with 30V/us maximum slew rate. The IDR suffix denotes SOIC-16 package with industrial temperature range and tape and reel packaging.

The MAX3232IDR operates as a dual RS-232 transceiver. (1) The internal dual charge pump generates +5.4V (V+) and -5.4V (V-) from the 3V to 5.5V VCC supply using four external 0.1uF capacitors. C1 and C2 form the voltage doublers that generate V+ and V- respectively. These generated rails power the RS-232 driver outputs, producing the +/-5.4V swing required by the TIA/EIA-232-F standard. (2) Each driver converts a TTL/CMOS logic input (0 to VCC) to an RS-232 output level. The driver inverts the signal: a logic low input produces a positive RS-232 output (space), and a logic high input produces a negative RS-232 output (mark). The slew rate is limited to 30V/us maximum to comply with RS-232 specifications and reduce EMI. (3) Each receiver converts an RS-232 input (+/-15V range) to a TTL/CMOS logic output. The receiver threshold has built-in hysteresis (0.3V typical) for noise immunity. The +/-15kV ESD protection on bus pins uses clamping diodes to protect the internal circuitry from electrostatic discharge events.
