The MAX31865ATP+ from Analog Devices (formerly Maxim Integrated) is a precision RTD-to-digital converter that simplifies platinum RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector) measurement. The device integrates a precision current source, a 15-bit delta-sigma ADC, and all necessary signal conditioning to directly measure PT100, PT1000, and other RTD types. The SPI interface provides easy connection to any microcontroller at up to 5 MHz clock rate. The +/-0.5C accuracy at 0C with PT100 is achieved through internal offset compensation and a precision reference resistor connection. The built-in fault detection identifies RTD open-circuit, short-circuit, and out-of-range conditions, enhancing system reliability. The TQFN-20 package provides a compact footprint with an exposed paddle for thermal management.

The MAX31865ATP+ uses a ratiometric measurement technique to convert the RTD resistance to a digital value. A precision reference resistor (RREF) and the RTD are connected in a voltage divider configuration, with the internal current source driving current through both. The ADC measures the ratio of the RTD voltage to the reference voltage, which eliminates errors from current source drift. The conversion equation is: RTD = (ADC_Code / 2^15) x RREF. The temperature is then calculated from the RTD resistance using the Callendar-Van Dusen equation: R(T) = R0 x [1 + AT + BT^2 + C(T-100)T^3] (for T<0C), where R0 is the RTD resistance at 0C (100 ohm for PT100), and A, B, C are the platinum coefficients defined by IEC 60751. The 15-bit ADC provides 0.03C temperature resolution. The internal offset compensation nulls the system offset at power-up by measuring with the current source disabled. Fault detection works by monitoring the RTD voltage for values outside the expected range.
