The MAX14808ETK+T from Maxim Integrated (now part of Analog Devices) is an octal three-level high-voltage digital pulser with integrated transmit/receive (T/R) switch, designed specifically for medical ultrasound transducer arrays. The ETK suffix denotes the 80-pin TQFP package, and +T indicates tape and reel packaging. The device integrates eight independent pulser channels, each capable of generating +/-2A output pulses at up to +/-100V supply voltage. In three-level mode, each channel can output +VPP, -VNN, or 0V, corresponding to the bipolar pulse patterns used in B-mode imaging. The MAX14808 variant provides 8 channels while the MAX14809 provides 4 channels with five-level pulsing capability for more sophisticated beamforming. The integrated T/R switch connects the transducer element to either the pulser output during transmit or the low-noise receive amplifier during receive, eliminating external diode pairs and reducing component count. The programmable active damping circuit quickly absorbs the transducer ring-down energy after the transmit pulse, improving axial resolution by reducing the pulse length. The device supports CW Doppler mode for blood flow imaging and B-mode for structural imaging.

The MAX14808ETK+T operates as a high-voltage pulser for piezoelectric ultrasound transducer elements. During transmit, each pulser channel generates bipolar high-voltage pulses by connecting the transducer element to +VPP, -VNN, or 0V through high-voltage MOSFET switches. The three-level pulsing sequence (+VPP, 0V, -VNN, 0V) creates a bipolar pulse that excites the piezoelectric crystal, generating an acoustic wave. The pulse amplitude, duration, and polarity pattern are controlled by digital inputs (DINP, DINN, CC0, CC1). After the transmit pulse, the T/R switch disconnects the pulser and connects the transducer to the receive amplifier input, allowing the weak echo signals (microvolts to millivolts) to be amplified. The active damping circuit provides a low-impedance path for the transducer ring-down current, quickly dissipating the stored mechanical energy and shortening the ring-down time. This is critical for axial resolution because a shorter pulse corresponds to better range resolution. In CW Doppler mode, the pulser generates a continuous sinusoidal excitation at the Doppler frequency, and the T/R switch routes the received signal to the Doppler processing chain. The five-level pulsing capability of the MAX14809 allows more complex apodization and focusing patterns for improved image quality.
