The Analog Devices LTC4020IUHF is a high-voltage buck-boost multi-chemistry battery charger providing PowerPath instant-on operation and high-efficiency charging over a wide voltage range. The onboard synchronous buck-boost DC/DC controller operates with battery and/or system voltages above, below, or equal to the input voltage, making it suitable for systems where the input voltage varies widely (such as solar panels or vehicle power). The device supports both Li-Ion CC/CV charge algorithms and an optimized 4-step, 3-stage lead-acid charge profile with ±0.5% float voltage accuracy. The PowerPath instant-on feature ensures system load power even with a fully discharged battery, while the ideal diode controller provides low-loss power routing when input power is limited.

The LTC4020IUHF operates as a synchronous buck-boost DC/DC converter controller combined with battery charge management and PowerPath control. The buck-boost topology allows the output voltage to be above, below, or equal to the input voltage using four external N-channel MOSFETs. The controller uses average current-mode control to regulate both the inductor current and the output voltage. For battery charging, the charge algorithm depends on the selected chemistry: Li-Ion mode applies constant-current (CC) charging until the battery reaches the float voltage, then transitions to constant-voltage (CV) with tapering current. Lead-acid mode executes a 4-step profile: qualification, bulk charge (CC), absorption (CV), and float maintenance. The PowerPath function uses an ideal diode controller that drives an external MOSFET to replace a Schottky diode between the input and system output, providing low-loss power routing with instant-on capability. The input voltage regulation feature clamps the input voltage for solar panel peak power operation. An NTC thermistor input enables temperature-qualified charging, suspending charge outside the safe temperature window.
