The LT1617ES5#TRPBF is an Analog Devices micropower inverting DC/DC converter in a 5-lead TSOT-23 package. Designed for higher power systems, it features a 350mA current limit and 1.2V to 15V input range. The 36V internal switch allows generation of negative output voltages up to -34V without expensive transformers, using a simple inductor-based charge pump topology. The 20uA no-load quiescent current and 0.5uA shutdown current minimize battery drain in portable applications. A current-limited fixed-off-time control scheme provides high efficiency across a wide load range. The 400ns typical off-time allows use of tiny low-profile inductors and capacitors for minimal board space. The device is ideal for generating LCD bias and other negative supplies from single-cell or multi-cell batteries.

The LT1617 uses a current-limited fixed-off-time control scheme for the inverting boost topology. When the internal NPN switch turns on, current ramps up in the inductor storing energy. When the current reaches the 350mA limit (or the off-time timer expires), the switch turns off for a fixed 400ns. During the off period, the inductor current flows through the output diode into the output capacitor, generating a negative voltage. The control loop adjusts the on-time to maintain regulation at the desired negative output voltage. The 36V switch rating allows the output voltage plus input voltage to reach 36V (output up to -34V with 2V input). The shutdown pin disables the device, reducing supply current to 0.5uA.
